Lithuanian parliament votes to lift constitutional ban on hosting nuclear weapons
Lithuania's parliament has voted to remove the constitutional article prohibiting nuclear weapons on Lithuanian territory. Ninety-nine deputies voted for the repeal, 13 against, and five abstained, according to LRT.
The amendment requires two further votes, scheduled for October 9 and January 12, with at least 94 of 141 deputies supporting it each time.
Lithuanian authorities confirmed in June that they are negotiating with the United States to host American nuclear-capable aircraft, after the Financial Times reported on talks covering Poland and the Baltic states.
The Kremlin said in September that Lithuania would be "in the crosshairs" of Russian nuclear weapons if it hosted a nuclear arsenal.
