Pakistan and Qatar mediate between Iran and the US as both sides signal terms for renewed talks

Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran on Monday, Naqvi's sixth visit since the US-Israel war on Iran began in February. Pakistan and Qatar are jointly working to reopen a diplomatic channel between Tehran and Washington.

Qatar's Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said Doha is mediating to "open a path for dialogue between Iran and the US," even for a short-term agreement. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stopped in Doha on his way to the UN General Assembly in New York, where Pezeshkian is also expected to speak.

Iran's top security official, Mohsen Rezaei, told Al Jazeera that Tehran has presented the Trump administration with new conditions to restart talks, after a 60-day memorandum reached June 17 failed to end the war or reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He said Iran is awaiting a US response.

Trump told Fox News on Sunday he was weighing three options: "wiping Iran out, letting them rot economically or making a deal." He said he would "probably" be open to meeting Pezeshkian.
