X will show users when governments force their posts to be limited

X expanded its transparency tool on Monday to let users see when their posts have been downranked or withheld because the company complied with a government legal demand. The feature also names which country made the request.

The tool, called "Under the Hood," already let users download a data file showing labels and visibility restrictions applied to their accounts. That file will now include posts withheld in specific countries following legal demands. Users who have posted at least ten times in a month can access it through the app's settings.

Most platforms disclose government takedown requests only in aggregate transparency reports, not at the level of individual accounts or posts. Free-expression groups have argued that some countries use laws covering hate speech, terrorism, or election rules to suppress political dissent.

The update follows X's earlier decision to open-source parts of its recommendation algorithm, including the parameters that weight signals determining which posts appear in users' feeds.
